Rewind to Friday – More overnight oats for breakfast! These were delicious, but I like to have veggies for breakfast. After I ate these, I totally put the empty bowl into our coffee cabinet…no clue why. Major brain fart. I never do stuff like that!
I did a little bit of work on the computer, then I did my stretches and a little bit of arm work. My knee was still sore on Friday, so I was nervous about whether or not I’d get to run Saturday morning. I tried to stay off my feet most of the day. I iced my knee every 3 hours, too. I was determined to run!
Lunch was chicken with garlic, honey, and mustard, plus some sautéed spinach. It was delicious.
I cleaned our entire office Friday afternoon – this room was AWFUL. It had just become a place for everything to go that we didn’t have another place for…it looks SO good now! After I cleaned, Kayla, Kallie, and I went to dinner at The Pitch. I had the reuben, which is AMAZING. I also had a new nitro stout…I can’t remember what it was called. But I loved it!
Jake was in Arkansas doing Three Days of Syllamo (a 50k, a 50-miler, and a 20k). He drove into town after his first race, which was the 50k. We talked on the phone for a little bit, then I sent him a smoochie picture. I’m sure he LOVED it. He sounded good on the phone, but from what he said, the 50k was not a fun race for him. He felt awful – he woke up with a terrible sinus infection right before he left. I felt so bad for him. But, he pushed through and finished the 50k! He was really worried about whether or not I’d be able to run on Saturday (9 miles, by the way….), so I assured him I’d be fine either way (which was a lie!), but I didn’t want him worrying about that when he had bigger things he needed to focus on.
Kayla and I drove around a little after dinner, looking at houses, then we went home and went to bed! I laid all my stuff out – this shirt cracks me up. I am actually a little Irish, so I guess I need a new shirt for next year.
I did another Epsom salt soak, then crawled into bed with my girls. We watched an episode of New Girl before we went to sleep. Lu slept like this…you can kind of see Aspen right behind the computer. These two do not know personal space.
Then it was up at 5:15 to get ready! I made coffee, got dressed, and put my knee brace on. My hamstring felt normal, so I wasn’t worried about that. My knee felt fine, too, but it hadn’t been hurting until I ran, so I wasn’t completely sure. I couldn’t decide if I should try to run a little before the race, or just start the race and then pull out if I needed to. I decided to run across my living room and see how it felt. I had done this on Thursday and Friday and my knee bothered me, so I figured it was an okay test. I did that and I didn’t have any pain! I was super excited, but I knew a lot could change in 9 miles.
Pre-race breakfast = half a plain white bagel, peanut butter, and honey. I have eaten this meal before races for years and it never upsets my stomach or gives me any issues.
Getting to dress up for races is so fun! I don’t usually dress up, but Kayla and I had a blast getting ready together Saturday morning. I was excited for her to do her longest run EVER. I’m so proud of her. Back in September, she ran a SUPER hard 6-miler with me. On our way to the race that morning she told me that it was going to be her longest run. I think I almost choked on my coffee. The race website had specifically said that this should not be a race that beginner’s do – HA! She CRUSHED that race and has been in love with running ever since!
We drove downtown, which is where the race was – Jake designed the course, so I had ridden my bike through it. I loved the course, so I was excited to finally get to run it. The race starts on the square, which is surrounded by tall buildings. It was SO windy Saturday morning, and the tall buildings made the area around the square seem like a wind tunnel. It was brutal! We went inside to use the restroom and try to stay warm before we started.
After our run! Guys, this was my first time pacing someone and I had a BLAST. First, I was able to run just fine and only had a TINY pain once for about 8 seconds. It went away and I ran the whole race pain-free. YAY! Second, Kayla was AMAZING. Jake, who is coaching her, wanted her to use this a training run, so he told me to keep her between an 8:45 and a 9:05. She finished the 15k in 1:21:17, with a pace of 8:45! When we were about a quarter of a mile from the finish, I told her to push it. She passed someone AND finished the race basically sprinting. I 100% teared up as I watched her pull away from me looking so strong. I knew Jake was going to be SO proud. It was an awesome race!

There was a beer fest after the race, so we hung out there most of the day. We also got to see the parade! We ran into my birth-mom and one of her friends, so that was so much fun! We love both of them – they’re hilarious!
After the parade, we grabbed a quick lunch from Civil Kitchen, then we went home to change for dinner. I had a dinner with my family, including some of my relatives from Iowa, so Kayla went to dinner with us!
Neither of us was all that hungry after our late lunch, so we both had salads. We went to Maso – this salad is called the Spicy Italian. It’s incredible.
I woke up on Sunday SO sore. Way more sore than I should be for running a 15k. That just shows me that I’m not where I need to be to shoot for a PR in Nashville – and that’s okay! I’d rather continue to build my running fitness, while being ABLE to run, than push for something that is probably going to result in an injury.
Breakfast on Sunday was bacon, eggs, half a bagel with jam, and sautéed spinach. Breakfast is my favorite. Also, I need goat cheese in my life for every meal.
After breakfast, I ran to the grocery store. I like getting groceries early before the store gets busy. All the produce!
Then it was time for ALL the meal prep! I prepped a ton of veggies and cooked some chicken. Here are the veggies for my lunches, I’ll mix these with lentils. It’s just a mixture of broccoli, cauliflower, and tri-colored carrots.
I made burrito bowls for Jake and topped them with these yummy veggies – tomatoes, onion, and jalapeños.
Lentils and brown rice ready for the week, too.
For breakfast this week we are having eggs, toast, and these veggies – zucchini, yellow squash, and mushrooms.
Here are Jake’s lunches for the week – we leave Friday morning for OKC, so he just has 4 days of work. I layered these burrito bowls with brown rice, a mixture of black beans and garbanzo beans….
Then topped that stuff with ranch chicken, the tomato/onion/jalapeño mixture, and Sriracha. I think he’ll like these!
I have resorted to sending all the Oreos with Jake for his lunches…I need them out of my house!
This fridge makes me happy. I cleaned out some old food, finished putting meal prep away, and got everything ready to go for the week.
Once I finished all the meal prepping, I sat down to eat lunch and watch an episode of New Girl (I just started New Girl from the beginning…for the 5th time…)
Look who’s home!! Jake got home around 4 yesterday. We immediately went to Brew Co so he could eat and get a beer in his mug. His last two races of the weekend, the 50-miler on Saturday and the 20k on Sunday went really well! His 50-miler felt the best, which is just crazy to me. He said the 20k hurt, but that both of the races were better than the 50k, which was on the first day. He’s amazing! He had some sore toenails, so here he is popping blisters. He’s literally sitting with a safety pin in his toe. Ick. I’m SO proud of him!! Now he gets a few rest days before his training continues! He has a 100-miler in October – and I promise you, I will NOT be missing that one!
I wasn’t hungry when we went to Brew Co, so I made a protein shake and had a protein ball later in the evening. These hit the spot!
Then it was an Epsom salt bath before bed!
